Task Force Agreed for RAF Leuchars
Scottish Minister for Parliamentary Business, Bruce Crawford MSP, visited Glenrothes on Friday (11 February) to meet with Fife Council, Scottish Enterprise, economic partners and local politicians to discuss the campaign to keep the RAF in Leuchars.
During discussion, it was agreed that forming a task force is the best way forward to continue the campaign. This follows submission of the economic and defence case to the Secretary of State for Defence, Dr Liam Fox.
Bruce Crawford, Minister for Parliamentary Business, said: "Establishing a task force for Leuchars unites the local community, private, voluntary and public sector in a common cause - the fight to protect the future of RAF Leuchars for the long term. This work began some weeks ago but the setting up of the taskforce galvanises the work already done and, importantly, allows the local community to increase the pace and strength of the campaign.
"We know that an announcement will not be made for some months so now is the time to make sure the voice of Leuchars, as well as the surrounding Fife and Tayside communities are heard at the highest levels of the UK Government."
Councillor Peter Grant, Leader of Fife Council commented: ?The establishment of the task force is an important move in the campaign to retain Leuchars as an RAF Air Base. This will ensure that we can build on the good work done to date in the relatively short time we have had to respond to a risk of closure. I would like to reiterate my invitation to Dr Liam Fox to come to Fife and visit Leuchars and see for himself the importance of RAF Leuchars as a vital UK strategic defence base."
